Taking its name from the distinctive colours of the Flying Scotsman’s
dining carts, Plum + Spilt Milk offers a magnificently elegant, yet relaxed
atmosphere. Claire Gratzke samples some of the classic, beautifully
presented dishes on offer.
Standing tall in one of the most convenient hotel spots in London, within King’s Cross station just a few minutes walk to the entrance to the Eurostar, is the Great Northern Hotel.
Plum + Spilt Milk is situated on the first floor of this grand hotel. The restaurant is visually striking with its round leather booths, rich colour scheme, handmade furniture and impressive light features. We were seated in a corner in the middle of the room, which boasts spectacular views across the newly developed King’s Cross.
To start I chose the creamed celeriac soup, which was rich in flavour and smooth in consistency. My boyfriend opted for the creamed smoked haddock with poached hen’s egg, which looked equally divine.
For mains, the pan-fried lemon sole with seaweed butter and a side of minted Jersey Royals was fresh and flavoursome. The fish had been cooked perfectly; light and delicate, yet deliciously moist.
The 32 day aged Angus sirloin being devoured in the seat opposite me looked tender and succulent, complemented by some buttered spring greens.
Our helpful waitress allowed us a comfortable break before we looked at the pudding menu, from which the iced peanut and salted caramel mousse was highly recommended. And rightly so. The sweet caramel complemented the salty peanut perfectly. Despite being completely full up from our starter and mains, the dessert was devoured within minutes.
